Neurofibroma Scalp

Neurofibromas are caused by a biallelic inactivation of the tumor suppressor gene neurofibromatosis. Numbers of subcutaneous neurofibromas of the scalp and body are associated with internal plexiform tumor burden in nf1.

Cutaneous neurofibromas, which arise along small peripheral nerves, are common. Neurofibromas of the scalp are rare findings of nf. Orbital neurofibromas are peripheral nerve sheath neoplasms derived from schwann cells, perineural cells and fibroblasts. Neurofibromas on the scalp, along the hairline, or around the waist where clothes rub can cause irritation and discomfort and are worthy of removal. Cutaneous neurofibromas typically emerge in the teenage years and increase in numbers with increasing age (fig 4). Skin (cutaneous) neurofibromas, or less discrete neurofibromas (plexiform neurofibromas) may cause disfigurement. Neurofibromas of the scalp can have protean presentations. They develop in early childhood and are virtually diagnostic of nf1.
